In een moleculair hobbeltje aan de uitsteeksels van het virus herkende hij ‘een onmiskenbaar spoor’ dat het virus helemaal niet uit de natuur komt – maar uit een laboratorium, zo  noteerde boulevardkrant  The New York Post . Het hobbeltje waarop Baltimore doelt, zit halverwege het spike-eiwit van het virus, heet officieel ‘furine-splijtingsplaats’ en vormt een soort knop: ‘Hier openen svp’. Als het coronavirus uw keelcellen binnendringt, drukken enzymen uit uw cellen die knop in, waarna het virus zichzelf begint uit te pakken, zodat het zich kan vermenigvuldigen.
